Cable pooling

Cable pooling is the sharing of one grid connection by several renewable plants, e.g. a wind farm and a solar farm, within the same connection capacity. In Poland it was enabled by an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act in force since 1 October 2023.

Why it works

Wind and solar generate at different times, so combined output rarely exceeds the connection capacity. The owner uses the connection better and can add a plant without new connection conditions.

What to watch

Shared use requires an agreement between plant owners and arrangements with the operator. When buying a cable-pooling project, check the capacity split, responsibility for curtailment and settlement rules.
